#SVWBMG: Match reaction

Hear from Robin Hack, Joe Scally and Borussia’s managing director for sport Roland Virkus, as well as both head coaches following the 2-2 draw against SV Werder Bremen.

Robin Hack: It’s a very important point for us. Of course we would have liked to have won, but in the end, we’re happy to be taking a point home from Bremen with us. It’s normal to feel frustrated when you find yourself 2-1 down after taking an early lead. We then made some tactical changes that allowed us to create more in attack. That also allowed us to up the pressure on Bremen again. I think we showed in that phase of the game that we know how to fight our way back. We were then able to reward ourselves with a late equaliser.

Joe Scally: The game featured a lot of tight moments and chances for both sides. We worked hard and were then somewhat unfortunate to concede before the break. In the end, we were able to mount a comeback and earn a point. We just need to keep focusing on ourselves, keep pushing and work to improve. We wanted to return home with all three points, but in the end, we’re leaving with just one.

Roland Virkus, managing director for sport: When you consider the game as a whole, then the draw is a fair result. We had control of the game in the first 20 minutes and took a deserved lead as a result. Bremen were then able to find their way into the match because we became too passive and didn’t have enough of the ball. We defended well at the start, but then conceded to make it 1-1 just before halftime. It’s frustrating that Werder were able to take a 2-1 lead from a corner, and we can’t allow that to happen. Nevertheless, we reacted well and managed to come back to earn an important and deserved point. Scoring a late equaliser gives us additional confidence for the games we have left.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: Rescuing a point with an injury-time penalty gives you something to be happy about when returning home. However, we once again dropped points after taking the lead. We did well to attack in the opening moments of the game and to defend against long balls. We then lost possession too often and conceded the equaliser after an individual mistake. Our intensity dipped a bit in the second half, which resulted in us being unable to create much up front. We only started to have more of the ball after Werder went 2-1 up, when we tried to throw everything we had into attack again. I’m happy that the team were able to reward themselves with a late goal to make it 2-2.

Head coach Ole Werner (SV Werder Bremen): We would have hoped for a different start to the game. We made it too easy for Borussia at the start and went behind early. We played well afterwards in general and executed a lot of aspects of our game plan. We were then rewarded in the second half with the two goals and taking the lead. We knew that Borussia would then switch it up defensively and throw everything at it at the end. We generally defended their attacks well, but then conceded the penalty and equaliser just before time. We’ve got a point to take home in the end though, and we’ll now concentrate on the last two games.
